Oh. Crap.

What a wonderful discovery. *sigh* Firefox (let alone Internet Exploder!) is unhappy with some parameter in my CSS for post pages. All of them show fine (well, all posts made here and all posts made after the switchover at TWC) in Opera, and the front page isn't bad at all in Firefox, so-so to crappy in Internet Exploder (but then, IE doesn't even claim to do CSS correctly, anyway--just "sorta, almost". You know, "The right way, the wrong way and the Microsoft way" heh). But individual post pages? Oh. Crap. *sigh* More digging, but this weekend's already scheduled up.

404 NOT FOUND ERROR

Hmmm, despite my aversion to Internet Exploder, I decided to go ahead and look at the new template in IE. Looks fine in Firefox and Opera, but looks like crap in IE.

Growing on me...

Ta know, I kinda like this setup: one blog just for testing things out. I think I'll keep it for just that purpose, you know: not change anything in TWC's template w/o testing it here, first. Teh, I know I can (and will, anyway) back up TWC before making changes, preview, etc., but I've noticed, using this "test blog" methodology that I can do slightly more complex things more comfortably. Besides, since next to no one's ever gonna even CLICK on over to this blog, it all falls into the "notaproblem" category. Besides, although I want to get this done quickly, "quickly" is a relative term. Other things besides play time on this template take precedence. This gives me an easier way to experiment and take the time I need to get it as right as I can, given other constraints. So, I'll probably only change 3-4 elements a day until I get this in workable shape.

It's not like riding a bicycle

It's more like playing an instrument. Well, at least in some ways. It's been probably six or seven years more like seven-eight years (heh) since I did much hand coding of html in a text editor. And I've only played around a little with CSS style sheets--just noodling, as it were. So I'm discovering holes and gaps, lacks and losses, absences and the like in my attempts to just get this flippin' template right before hitting TWC with it. (Edit: Hmph. So far, my only "real" contribution has been to modify Basil's Haloscan Hack so that the width of the Trackbacks window resizes automatically when I change resolutions. It's wedded to the size of the center column, which is variable; the sidebars are constant size. Works well in Opera and Firefox, and as I say below, who cares how it works in Internet Exploder.) Yeh, yeh, I made another backup of the mess over at TWC today. And make no mistake: I know that silly thing is a mess. Things just slapped in the sidebar and header like topsy messing with porridge. *sigh* Well, I always said I didn't want this stuff to be too much like work, cos it was mainly to still the voices in my head. heh But... ...Just like picking a musical instrument back up after years of not playing, there's a certain pleasure in the work of getting one's chops back—even when those chops were only so-so to begin with, perhaps. So. Gonna do some "clean kludging" with this template. Move things around so that alignment issues aren't so noticeable, maybe, if I don't get the effect I want at several different screen resolutions in different browsers. Not gonna worry too much about Internet Exploder, though. I don't really care to bend myself outa shape serving users/readers who insist on using a non-standards-compliant browser. Let 'em eat cake. So. My dear non-existant readers: hit me with your best shot. What do YOU say I need to do to this template?

Playing CSS Script-Kiddie

Playing with templates and such. "These are not the droids you are seeking." Got the basic stuff here and have been playing with colors, little with layout, etc. to do a makover for importing to third world county. Asked for input here, which is about the only reason I'll have anyone read this. heh So, whadda you think? Suggestions? Like, for example, any suggested background graphics, efficient ways to add blockquote backgrounds only, etc.? Be brutal, but helpful, OK? Thanks.

Just noticed the spacing of the Blogrolling scripted blogrolls on the right sidebar and am wracking my brain trying to remember the best way to move them juuust a smidge off the line. Moved 'em to the left sidebar where the alignment on the line doesn't bother me so much. For now, so-so. It'll come to me. Or not. heh
